About
This Special Edition Photograph was authorized by the Ben Martin Estate. Ben Martin was TIME Magazine’s first New York Bureau staff photographer covering wars, fashion, politics, arts, business, and sports for TIME, Life, Fortune, People, and Sports Illustrated for thirty-three years. He immortalized evocative images that defined the 1960’s.
In this series of legendary photoshoots, Martin captured the complexity of each artist's personality, art, and surroundings. This black & white photograph was taken in 1962 and is a rare capture of Larry Rivers (1923 – 2002) with one of his artworks.
Rivers was an American artist considered to be one of the original creators of Pop art. He was one of the first artists to merge non-objective, non-narrative art with narrative and objective abstraction, reproducing everyday objects of American popular culture as art. He earned a BA in art education from New York University in 1951. His work was quickly acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. During the early 1960s Rivers lived in the Hotel Chelsea, notable for its artistic residents such as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Arthur C. Clarke, Dylan Thomas, Sid Vicious and multiple people associated with Andy Warhol's Factory.
The size of the photograph is 19.25 inches high by 15.25 inches wide. This photograph is framed in a black wooden frame measuring 25.5 inches high and 21.5 inches wide.
